Connect the outer and inner journeys of your characters.

Do plot events kick off a story, or does the story kick off a novel’s events? You can look at this as a chicken-or-egg question, but it’s more useful to embrace the duality of fiction: outer journey and inner journey working together and amplifying each other. The journey toward wholeness is a mysterious one, with turns in the road coming at any time and in a number of ways. In our lives, it is the unanticipated discoveries about ourselves that have the most lasting effects. The struggle with self is the substance of our own stories.
