Perspective: Seeing Beyond the Single Lens

Fiction writers can give readers a different perspective to look at life; help them gain more empathy, compassion and understanding about what another person’s life is worth. This presentation considers the pitfalls of writing from a limited perspective, and how to fix this common misstep by borrowing specific tactics from the world of journalism to add breadth, depth, and authenticity to your work, keeping your readers intrigued, empathetic, and engaged. We will also discuss the benefits of writing what you don’t know; understanding the anatomy of a story; and using research to break out of comfort zones, write diverse characters, and achieving verisimilitude while broadening your own perspective.
