Networking 101 — It's Who You Know!

Building a solid network of key contacts, and having a group of helpful people in your corner, are vital to your success as a freelance writer.

‘Contacts’ refers to individuals who can provide information, story leads, and act as sources or interviewees. Also fellow writers and other industry professionals, who may help your career growth, including providing introductions to editors, which is a game changer for freelancers.

You can network at events, meetings, lunches, writing groups, online forums, social media groups, and so on. If you nurture those relationships with regular communication and interaction, you’ll seldom have trouble finding sources for your articles. It could also help you get some sought-after bylines, advance your career, and it often leads to lifelong friendships with other writers.

But you can't just turn up and nurse a drink in the corner. You need to put yourself out there,  'work the room,' and start talking to people. You have to turn into a Chatty Cathy and get out of your comfort zone.

Writers may be shy, but we all love talking about writing don't we? With a few simple techniques, practice, and courage, you'll be amazed how well you'll progress, and how fast your calendar will fill up.

Through anecdotes, personal experience, and by sharing simple techniques and advice, Alison Hill will help you "schmooze" your way into writing success (in a good way of course!)
