Writing Short Stories for Novelists: A Workshop

The short story has a compelling history. According to some, its origins date to the fourth century and the Greek, while others credit Sir Walter Scott's 1827 The Two Drovers as the first literary short story. Its beginnings are debatable and impacted by culture and time. This interactive workshop will summarize the fundamental tools and best practices for writing short stories and cover styles such as lyrical, flash fiction, and vignette. We’ll also dive into how an increased understanding of themes, conflict, character, and the 'single event' contribute to creating compelling short stories. Additionally, we’ll explore how short story techniques can assist in developing a full-length novel. There will also be in-session writing exercises and participation in analyzing one or two notable short stories.
