You are Here: Worldbuilding in Young Adult Fiction

This session will focus on techniques in worldbuilding in young adult fiction—whether writing a contemporary story set in a small town or an intergalactic story set on Mars. How do you create a world that rings true without falling in to the common missteps of info-dumps and generally confusing readers? Learn about using world bibles, generating focused content, and utilizing all senses in descriptions; participate in writing exercises that will focus on worldbuilding with the goal of discovering specific items tied to your young adult characters. You will also analyze excerpts from young adult novels—contemporary, fantasy, science fiction—and critique the various techniques used, leaving with practical tips on creating settings that forge realistic connections with readers.
